Physical, Political, and Relief Maps

Different maps show different things. A political map shows lines and places that people made, like the borders of countries and states and the cities in them. Each country or state is often a different color, so its borders are easy to see. A physical map shows natural features, like mountains, rivers, lakes, and deserts. It often uses color to show elevation, which means how high the land is above the sea. Green often means low land, brown means higher land, and white means the tallest mountains. The map key tells you what each color means. A relief map makes hills and mountains easier to picture, using shading that looks like shadows. Some land is lower than the land around it. This is called a depression. Death Valley in California is so low that it is below sea level. A topographic map shows height with thin lines called contour lines. When the lines are close together, the land is steep. Pick the map that fits your question: a political map helps you find a capital city, and a physical map helps you find mountains and rivers.
