Plot structure: conflict, rising action, climax, and resolution
Most stories are built around a conflict, a problem a character faces with another character, with nature or society, or inside their own mind. The beginning (exposition) introduces the characters and setting; the rising action builds tension as the conflict grows; the climax is the turning point, the moment of greatest tension; the falling action shows what happens as a result; and the resolution shows how the conflict ends. Tracing these parts helps you understand how a story is put together and why its events happen in the order they do.
