Action verbs and linking verbs
An action verb tells what the subject does, like run, write, or think. A linking verb doesn't show action: it links, or connects, the subject to a word that names or describes it. Forms of to be (am, is, are, was, were) are the most common linking verbs, as in The soup is hot, and verbs like seem, become, look, feel, and taste can be linking verbs too, as in The soup tastes salty. A quick test: if you can swap the verb for is or are and the sentence still makes sense, it is probably working as a linking verb.
