The Carbon Cycle
The carbon cycle describes how carbon moves among the atmosphere, ocean, living things, soil, and rock, through processes like photosynthesis and respiration, the exchange of carbon dioxide between the ocean and the air, and the very slow burial of carbon in rock and fossil fuels over millions of years. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon that had been stored underground for millions of years back into the atmosphere much faster than natural processes remove it, which is a main driver of the increased greenhouse effect covered elsewhere in this course.
