The scale of the universe
The universe spans an almost incomprehensible range of scale: Earth is one small planet orbiting one ordinary star among hundreds of billions in the Milky Way galaxy, which is itself just one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in the observable universe. Astronomers use enormous units like the light-year, the distance light travels in one year, just to make these distances manageable to talk about.
