Multiple lines of evidence for evolution and common ancestry
Multiple independent lines of evidence support the idea that all life shares common ancestry and has changed over time. The fossil record shows life changing over millions of years and includes transitional forms that link older and newer groups, like fossils connecting land-dwelling mammals to modern whales. Biogeography, the way related species are distributed around the world, shows the same pattern: island species often most closely resemble species on the nearest mainland. Living things also share similarities in their DNA and protein sequences, similar anatomical structures (homologies) even in very different-looking organisms, and similarities in how different species develop as embryos.
